Cologne, a city dominated by the magnificent twin spires of its world-famous Cathedral (Kölner Dom), offers layers of history far beyond its most prominent landmark. After immersing myself in the awe-inspiring scale and stained-glass artistry of the Dom, I felt drawn to explore a different facet of the city's past – the renowned Melaten Cemetery (Melaten-Friedhof). Foregoing quicker transport options, I decided a walk was in order, a transition from the bustling heart of the city to a place of quiet remembrance.
It was, as anticipated, a long walk. The journey itself became part of the experience, leading me away from the throngs near the cathedral, through urban streets and quieter residential areas. There was a distinct chill in the air, a crispness that hinted at the winter weather. The anticipation built as the city sounds gradually faded, replaced by a sense of approaching stillness.
